Congressional Hearings can be pretty boring.
Before being elected to Congress, I was a law professor and consumer advocate.
I loved teaching—but I'll be honest, I didn't always teach the sexiest subjects. I taught the uniform commercial code, often at 8 am.
I quickly realized that to get my students to learn the subject matter, I had to make it engaging. I came up with all sorts of acronyms, and was a big fan of the visuals I could draw on the whiteboards that line UC Irvine classrooms.
When I got to Congress, I realized I was being presented with a similar challenge. Congressional Hearings were often boring. They were being treated as these perfunctory things.
I realized as a new Member, I didn't have a ton of power or sway. But I did have a few minutes in Congressional Hearings—and I could meticulously prepare for them, bring engaging props (like the whiteboard), and enact real change through those hearings.
It was through my questioning of a Trump Administration official in a hearing in March 2020 that we secured free COVID testing for every American.
Through hearings, I've been able to show how corporate greed has driven inflation, how the Pentagon is full of waste, and the widening gap between CEO and worker pay.
