Friends, I want to share a bit about my personal life that you may not know yet.
I was raised by social justice warriors.
My dad marched for civil rights in Selma, Alabama, where he heard Martin Luther King Jr. preach. My mom, born and raised in the Philippines, spent years fighting for the restoration of democracy in her home country.
My parents had me while living and working in the Philippines as social justice missionaries. I was born when a dictator was rising to power and martial law was imminent.
It was critical to both of my parents that I grow up in a country with democracy, freedom, rule of law, and human and civil rights — and sadly it became clear to them that wasn't the case in the Philippines. So they brought my family here, to California, when I was just two months old.
A short while later, my parents began working with the United Farm Workers of America — fighting for workers' rights, fair pay, and shade and water breaks alongside Dolores Huerta, Cesar Chavez, and Philip Vera Cruz.
I would never have guessed as a young kid that I would grow up to serve as the Attorney General of California — but as long as I can remember, I've known that I wanted to fight for those most vulnerable to have a fair shot at the California Dream.
That's why I do this work. I know, without a doubt, that the California Dream is alive and well because I'm living mine — and I'm committed to using every bit of platform and power I have to lift people up and fight for justice for all.
I'm up for re-election in November, and I want nothing more than to continue this fight.
California needs an Attorney General who will stand up to those who abuse their power — whether it's corrupt politicians, corporate polluters, extremist groups trying to roll back our rights, or powerful interests that exploit workers, cheat consumers, and put profits ahead of people.
