Jason,
Earlier this month at a rally, a frustrated constituent called out Rep. Stephen Lynch for not doing enough to fight back against Trump's abuses of power and protect our democracy.
Instead of hearing them out, his response was to dismiss their comment completely, telling the very people he's supposed to serve that what he does is his decision to make, and if they don't like it, they can run for Congress themselves. After two decades in office, this is how he acts.
This is the problem with Democrats, Jason.
There's a sense of entitlement that's taken root. A belief that once the election is won and you're "safe" in your seat, listening to your constituents is optional. That instead of demanding better, voters should fall in line with the options they've been given.
That's not how democracy works, and it's certainly not how you win elections.
When our leaders act like they own their seats instead of working everyday to earn them, people start to lose faith in our party and our democracy — and justifiably so.
But we aren't going to settle for that. We won't be cornered into supporting candidates that don't want to hear from us, and won't prioritize the issues that matter to us most.
Like Lynch said: if you want a say, run for Congress. We'll gladly take him up on that offer.
Leaders We Deserve is backing Patrick Roath, a bold young leader who has consistently stepped up to serve his community when it matters most, and delivered real results for the people of Massachusetts. He's fought to protect voting rights, asylum seekers, and has stood up for working families time and time again.
Patrick's priorities won't be firing back at his own constituents or taking a lukewarm approach to Trump's attacks on our freedom. They'll be to make affordable housing a reality, address the high costs of childcare, and to put forth an agenda that's driven by working people and the issues that they face.
And Patrick's campaign is powered entirely by grassroots supporters. No corporate cash, and no billionaire donors. That means he's counting on people like you to help him compete against a 20+ year incumbent armed with establishment support and deep-pocketed donors.
Thank you for being a part of this movement with us.
With gratitude,
David Hogg
