Having a mental illness is not a crime.
That's why I introduced the Mental Health Justice Act. If enacted, trained healthcare professionals would respond to folks experiencing a mental health crisis rather than police. Can you quickly add your name in support of this legislation?
Just like if you were having a heart attack, you'd want an ambulance and a hospital—if you're experiencing a mental health crisis, you should receive proper care from trained mental healthcare professionals.
Roughly a quarter of the people who are killed by law enforcement are experiencing a mental health crisis at the time. We can't address police violence without talking about mental health.
I won't BS you, the unfortunate reality is that with Kevin McCarthy and Republicans holding the House majority, this bill doesn't have much of a chance at becoming law this year. But these are the types of bills I'll champion in the Senate, and through California alone we can flip a handful of MAGA-held seats and give Democrats the House majority.
Sign on to show your support for making mental health and legislation like this a real priority.
Onward,
Katie
