Today we woke up to the sad news that California Senator Feinstein passed away.
As the first woman to represent California in the Senate, Dianne Feinstein paved the way for generations of women to serve—including me. She was elected in 1992, which was dubbed the 'year of the woman.' The year prior, there were just two women serving in the United States Senate. She was a true trailblazer.
She left her mark in tough fights against gun violence, torture, and homophobia. From writing and championing the 1994 nationwide assault weapons ban to helping reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, her legacy will live on.
I'm thinking of her loved ones during this difficult time.
